A global analysis of diurnal variability in dust and dust mixture using CATS observations

Abstract. The current study investigates the diurnal cycle of dust and mixture loading across global tropics, subtropics, mid-latitudes by analyzing aerosol extinction typing profiles observed Cloud-Aerosol Transport System (CATS) lidar aboard International Space Station. According to comparison with ground-based other satellite observations, CATS observations exhibit reasonable quality but significant day–night inconsistency. To account for this inconsistency in data quality, variability characteristics is currently examined separately daytime nighttime periods. Based on an analysis variance (ANOVA) analytical framework, pronounced variations are generally uncovered during periods over terrestrial areas. identifies statistically key sources, including Bodélé Depression, West African El Djouf, Rub' al-Khali desert, western southern North America, confirming previous observation-based findings regarding emission underlying meteorological processes these regions.
